Brothers Arvin, Brian, and Diovanne Jugarap, together with their uncle Nonito Donaire Sr., opened Kennel Boxing in San Leandro with one goal—to produce world champions.
When Nonito Sr. had to take a step back, Arvin stepped up as the Head Coach of Kennel Boxing, using what he had learned from his Uncle over years of training. Alongside Valerie Jugarap, Derrick Cagaanan, and Gary Cagaanan, they fought through financial strain and the challenge of building the gym’s name.
In September 2009, Ana “The Hurricane” Julaton, under Arvin’s guidance, won the IBA Super Bantamweight World Title. The victory put Kennel Boxing on the map and brought Nonito Sr. back to train the next wave of champions.
Kennel Boxing was flourishing and expanded to a bigger location on Teagarden Street. They launched the Battle at the Kennel competition events, created corporate and youth programs, and became a community hub for fitness and boxing.
COVID-19 was a setback for the fitness community and forced a move for Kennel Boxing to a smaller space on Hesperian Avenue, but community support and a new partnership with Oula Jugarap, Emily Smith, and Jorge Vargas reignited the mission.
Kennel Boxing is back stronger than ever – located in their new home in downtown San Leandro on East 14th Street. Kennel Boxing continues to build champions, discipline, and community-inside and outside the ring.
